description Ocean Lakes Family Campground was built by Mary Emily and Nelson Jackson, along with their five daughters, starting in 1970. On July 2, 1971, Ocean Lakes opened with 30 campsites and one bathhouse. Nelson Jackson was 50 years old at the time. “People were lined up outside the gate by the hundreds and we were clearing spots for their campers as fast as they could park ‘em,” he explains with a smile. Today, Ocean Lakes features 893 campsites and 2,554 annual lease sites on 310 oceanfront acres with nearly one mile of beachfront, four bathhouses, and more than 360 employees in the height of the camping season. It is the largest campground on the east coast and one of the largest in the United States. On an average seasonal day Ocean Lakes has 25,000 - 35,000 guests enjoying the countless amenities that have made it a local favorite and a national vacation destination. “We could do a lot of things with 310 oceanfront acres in Myrtle Beach, and we’ve had many lucrative offers, but we believe that everyone - the butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker - should have the privilege of enjoying God’s beautiful ocean,” explains Nelson Jackson, during an interview when he was 88. Camptown Center Established 2005 During your stay you may find you have forgotten something, run out of something, or just plain want something. More than likely you'll find it at the 12,000 square foot Sandy Mart, along with groceries, snacks, ice, gifts and souvenirs. If shopping makes you hungry, Sandy's Meet n' Eat shares the same parking lot! You can throw piles of laundry into one of our machines (we have 100) at Sandy's Soapy Suds, or let us do it for you at Sandys' Fluff n' Fold. Located in the heart of the campground it is a major hub of activity. Guests can enjoy dining, shopping, entertainment, majestic Live Oak trees, free wi-fi and a great laundry facility. The Camptown Center is part of our ongoing master planned improvements and opened in March 2005. Commemorative brick pavers are available for families who dream of always being part of Ocean Lakes. The brick pavers are a great gift for the beach lover in your family, or in honor of a loved one. Proceeds will be donated to the American Heart Association and the March of Dimes. Nature Center A one of a kind facility in this area, the Ocean Lakes Nature Center focuses on marine life. Leonard Raker, Curator, has traveled extensively during our off-season gathering items for exhibit. Our Naturalist, Brandy, has a degree in Marine Biology and loves to help guests learn about the ocean. The Nature Center offers exhibits and information on shells, fossils, sea life, wildlife and ecology of coastal South Carolina. Our knowledgeable staff is on hand to identify items discovered on our nearly one mile of the Atlantic Ocean beach and answer any questions you may have. They also know where all the good "shell" spots are located along the Grand Strand. Join them on a beach walk or for an educational program. It will be enjoyed by the entire family! Stop in to meet our newest "teammates" Bubbles and Squirt. For our younger guests with upcoming science projects the Ocean Lakes Nature Center is a great place to gather information and get a head start. Brandy would love to assist you on ideas and marine life info. Make sure to follow up with them next summer and let them know how your project turned out!
